Rose Moscata and their Hybrids
They were initially created by the English Reverend J. Pemberton who, towards the end of the 19th century, used the Muscat rose “Trier”, crossing it with the first hybrids of tea and noisette .
Soft- growing shrub roses appeared, producing soft , fragrant bouquets of flowers in waves on the greenery.
Moscata roses are still excellent roses for their adaptability and versatility . Their branches are soft, they can form large shrubs or even small climbers : they are re- flowering , easy and often produce decorative berries .
Pemberton’s work was continued by Bentall and subsequently many other breeders focused their attention on the qualities of these roses. In Germany W. Kordes used them to develop roses that are more resistant to winters but able to flourish again and from the 1980s the Belgian Luis Lens and his collaborators Boudolf still active, made the Moscata rose their specialty.
From the Moscata roses , the current floribunda originated, through another category of related roses called “Polyantha”.
They are very decorative roses and which give satisfaction for their adaptability . They have a “rural” and romantic aspect, without being cheeky or too baroque.
The varieties that we propose with the name of the Roman villas, such as rose bushes that are always in bloom and versatile, are ( Villa Fidelia, Villa Ada, Villa Pamphili, Villa Torlonia, Cecilia Metella, Celimontana, Aureliana, Villa Borghese) derive from this category crossed with the Noisette.
While most of the Moscata on the market were obtained in cold temperate climates, the varieties obtained by Rolando Zandri are obtained in a Mediterranean climate, therefore born and tested in a warmer environment .
